Summer Days in Tampa Bay - June 2009

With an early sunrise and the typical afternoon thunderstorms rolling in on a daily basis, summer is here in full swing. But the fishing is just as hot as the weather!

SNOOK- Fishing has been good. Fish have moved to their summer spots. Most passes, bridges, and troughs along the beaches are stacked up with big females ready to feed. Fishing docks at night is a deadly combination as well. Pinfish, greenbacks, threadfin, and shrimp are great baits.

REDFISH- Schools are still around but in deeper water. Low morning tides on deeper flats will be a deadly combination when targeting Reds. The bait of choice for me has been cut bait. Live bait will work as well, but with water temperature hot you will tend to loose bait on certain flats throughout the bay.

MACKEREL- Have been on fire! This is very easy to target, look for big pods of bait scattering on the surface around structure. Anchor up, hang a chum bag over the side, put a frisky greenback on a long shank hook with 40lb leader and you will have rods bent for as long as you want.

Captain Jason Prieto is a native resident of Tampa and has fished Tampa Bay and its surrounding waters for the past 20 years.
