September 2009 Fishing Forecast

Weather will be a big factor in September. Hurricanes and storms can affect fish movements and feeding habits. Snook will start their migration from the beaches and passes into the back country, creeks, and rivers. After spawning all summer they will be hungry and ready to try any food presented to them. Greenback sardines will be plentiful, although small; I recommend a ¼-mesh cast net for best results. Don’t overlook silver dollar-size pinfish; they are a favorite of Redfish this time of year. Spanish Mackerel action will peak this month and, baring any unforeseen bad weather, action will be hot all month.

A chum bag over the side will bring the toothy critters to the boat. I prefer to use a eagle claw 1/0 xxx long shank hook in place of wire to avoid cut offs. For leader I find a good grade of mono line in the 30 to 40 pound test works better than fluorocarbon leader, and it’s cheaper. Redfish will school early mornings along the mangroves until bright light, and work their way into the deeper waters off the flats and docks looking for cooler water. September is a great month to take kids fishing. Plenty of action with Bluefish, Ladyfish, Mackerel, Trout, and small Sharks along the deeper flats of the bay.

One of my favorite catcher of fish, when I have kids onboard, is a Cajun Thunder cork with a 30 inch leader and D.O.A. shrimp suspended under it; a short pop of the rod gives the sound of a wounded bait and the D.O.A. shrimp does the rest of the work. Good fishing and tight lines. A native resident of Tampa, Captain Sergio Atanes has been fishing the waters of Tampa Bay and Boca Grande for over 40 years.
