The season's first major fishing tournament in Florida’s Emerald Coast region is just around the corner!  Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is the location of the annual Sandestin Fishing Tournament scheduled for August 25th through the 29th this year. The Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, and Baytowne Village, and Marina will feature live entertainment, vendors, and artists throughout the entire fishing tournament weekend. This area is a must-see region, voted one of the top 2010 destinations in the world by Frommer’s.

The town of Destin has adopted the slogan "The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village" and the area is considered one of the richest fishing areas in the region. Roughly 3.5 million visitors come to Destin each year, a good number of them hoping for the best catch on the Gulf coast.

There are many types of fish common to the waters all-around Destin such as whiting, channel bass, sheepshead, blue runner, bluefish, sail cat, mackerel, king mackerel and cobia. For the trolling fan, March to November brings cobia season and it’s common to catch cobia in excess of 100 pounds.

The salt marshes of the Choctawhatchee Bay and the surrounding estuary provide some of the best fishing available in Destin. Fishing in the bay is year round and brings in speckled sea trout, sheepshead, white trout, channel bass, red fish, sail cat, bluefish, and flounder. Crabs are also plentiful along the shore of the bay, which can yield blue crabs throughout the year.

The tournament is a gala created to celebrate the fabulous fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Tournament categories will include Tuna, Wahoo, Swordfish, Blue Marlin, King Mackerel, Grouper, Amberjack, and catch-and-release for the Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Swordfish, Sailfish, and Spearfish.

Shawna Meisner, the tournament director, states “This event is an opportunity for anglers to get out there and enjoy what they love to do as well as for their families to enjoy all the amenities the resort has to offer."

The fishing tournament will be held at the 2,400 acre Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The Marina has 98 slips surrounded by 30 charming neighborhoods with villas, townhomes, condos, and hotel accommodations. On-site there are over 7 miles of pristine white sandy beaches, 4 golf courses that are considered world class, 19 swimming pools, and more, so even if you don’t like to fish, it’s a great vacation destination.

There are plenty of exciting and fun activities planned for the tournament weekend, such as the boat parade, weekly weigh-ins, live entertainment, artists, activities, and even fireworks.

The Destin History and Fishing Museum will benefit from this community event. The museum's mission is to preserve and honor the history of Destin.
