SE Florida Weather Windy, But Gorgeous

Out in the open water, it has been a little difficult to fish, but the backwaters have been sheets of glass. The early morning bite will start to ease off until the sun breaks the horizon and the fish warm up a little. This holiday season should be one for the record books if the weather holds out. Climate change is at hand so we will have to wait and see.

The water has finally cleared up from the releases from Okeechobee and the red tide has finally blown off shore so, aside from the wind, it’s been great the past couple of weeks.

Our cold weather is taking its time to settle in this year. I remember last year it showed up overnight and the fish were in a state of shock, so the bite was slow going.

This time around the weather has been absolutely gorgeous!! The fish and anglers alike are enjoying the transition of the season. The only thing we have had to contend with is the wind.

This is the season for fishing in Pine Island so, when you come down, look me up and we’ll go fishing. I have been chartering out of my kayak for about three years now and I wouldn’t change a thing. Although our water is extremely shallow in the winter, it makes no difference when you’re in a kayak. The fish come to the shallower water as it is always four to six degrees warmer than the Gulf. Flats fishing is where it’s at in the colder months. If you haven’t been kayaking before, I should tell you that most of my clients have been in their fifties and older.

Kayaks these days are extremely stable and you sit on top instead of being stuffed inside the kayak. We fish close to home and utilize the currents and wind through most of the trip, so we aren’t fighting the boat the whole time and we can focus on catching fish. If you are new to the sport and you have your own boat, I offer “educational” charters for half-price.

Now that you have a new kayak, come on out and I’ll show you where and how to fish the shallows.

I hope everyone enjoys the holidays. Til next month.
