At this time of year, the inshore flats fishing has been outstanding for nice Gator Trout (Spotted Sea Trout). It’s great table fare, and usually provides a good bite on all occasions, along with Redfish, Sheephead, small Tarpon, poor man’s Tarpon (Ladyfish), Flounder, Blue Fish, an occasional Snook, and more.
Using a combination of live and artificial baits depending on the tide, wind, and available live bait, whether we are fishing structure, oyster bars, docks, rock piles, or vast pothole-laden inshore flats we’ve been producing with pilchards, select shrimp, or pinfish. The fish seem to want something moving on an open inshore flat during this Indian summer we are experiencing.
Water temperatures now are 63° F to 68° F range. It’s been very good fishing in between the occasional cold fronts. Inshore flats fishing in Tarpon Springs, New Port Richey, and Clearwater are full of exceptional wildlife, dolphins, manatees, bald eagles, osprey, and a great number of Mother Nature’s wonderful creatures.
Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year! God Bless!
